About Dr. John C. Umhau

This website is supported as a public service by my medical practice. My internet practice is devoted entirely to the treatment of alcohol use disorder.

My interest in alcohol use disorder developed over twenty yeas of work with with the homeless in Washington D.C.  Before that, I completed a residency in Clinical Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, a MD at Wake Forest University, a MPH at Johns Hopkins University and a BS at Davidson College.   I am certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

For more than twenty years, I was a Senior Clinical Investigator at the  National Institutes of Health where I conducted numerous research studies to learn more about the brain, nutrition, and alcoholism.  My published articles on nutrition and human health are available here.
